When you live on a farm, there is always plenty of work to be done. Honestly, the adults can’t keep up with all of the work we have to do around here. My husband always says that if we weren’t involved with baseball, school board, private organizations, story hour, extension board, golf, the list goes on and on, we’d be able to get our work done and have a beautiful farm! The truth is, we are a highly involved family. We enjoy serving others in our community and love to watch our kids participate in extra curricular activities. However, there just aren’t enough hours in the day to get everything done! Our boys are young, but starting to be able to help. I do look forward to the day where one of them can mow the lawn and save me four hours, but I don’t want them to grow up, TOO fast!!

Our oldest is seven and he is starting to be able to help more. He loves when we give him some responsibility. This fall he ran the auger to put corn in the bin. He didn’t want anyone around, because he wanted to be independent. (We had an adult around all the time, the farm is a very dangerous place!!) It’s fun to watch our kids grow, and spread their wings. I keep encouraging my husband to take our eldest son into the hog barn to help. Derek is a little bit hesitant, because those pigs weigh well over 200 pounds when they are full grown and our little 45 pound son would have quite a time with that large of an animal. The other day Jake helped move pigs. Dad reported back that he did a great job, and this little son of mine was quite proud. He has to wear his pliers into the barn, just like Dad. Before going into the barn, he changes into his “pig boots and coat”, just like dad, too! Before we know it our oldest son will be driving on the farm, and giving Mom orders!!

I love the age our sons are at, at this moment. Dad is pretty awesome in their eyes and they enjoy helping. When Derek calls up and asks for Jake to come down and help, you can almost bet that Sam will also be getting dressed to go work, too!

Derek and I both come from hard working families. We want more than anything to instill in our boys a sense of hard work. There’s just something about seeing those boys work on the farm that melts this momma’s heart.
