New Week, New Letter! We are off to a great start!! This is two days of school in one, but as I look at my calendar…this may be one of our only school days, this week.
Sammy loves learning new letters. I always start with my favorite writing app, Letter School. I love this app because if literally forces kids to use the correct letter formation. Also, its fun. There are uppercase, lowercase, numbers and two different styles of letters. It’s an all around amazing app.
O is for OBSERVATION. This is a new, big word. We talked about what is means, then I gave him a magnifying glass. He loved looking at a cellphone from 1999. 😉

Then we observed our science experiment from last week.

I used to be way more into apps on the Ipad. The first time I taught preschool I was all about apps and Ipad time. Now I realize that kids spend too much time on electronics (including mine), so I make preschool less about electronics.
This app is actually pretty cool. Its not a game and it just has the kids put the letters in order. There are a few different “games”, and they are all great.
This is the alphabetizing app from Montessori.

Speaking of not using too many electronics…then I let my kid watch a video from ABC Twiggles. (And the rest of the day he watched TV. I’m kidding!!)

Next we used this great magnetic board to practice making the letter O.

We’ve been talking a lot about opposites. So, we played this great opposite game. I divided the cards into two groups. Sam would pick one, I would tell him what it said and he would look for the opposite.

We read Owl Babies next, which is a cute little book.

I’m a HUGE Melissa and Doug Puzzle fan. This was a larger puzzle than my Sam is used to. We worked on this together and talked about strategies.
Most kids need to be taught how to put a puzzle together. Also, it takes MANY practices before they can do them without frustration, independently.
- Flip all the pieces over.
- Sort pieces by colors.
- Work on one area of your kid’s choice at a time.
- Discuss flat and corner pieces.

We started off with the rocket, then branched our way out. Sam basically did this all by himself with a little Mom Coaching.

More technology… 😉

Our Letter Book was next. We make a new page for each letter.

These little cars are SOO much fun. By the way, I keep preschool stuff put away. I need these toys and learning activities to be new and exciting. I also use them when my kids are younger for busy boxes. I’ll blog about that soon!!

Lastly, we had an Egg Drop Experiment. We talked about the word fragile. I told Sam I was going to give him a container, he was going to make it so the egg wouldn’t break when we dropped the container.

Sam wanted to put hard toys in the container (fail). I encouraged him to try a washcloth.

The baby helped, too! Tupperware is his favorite!!

Our egg did crack, slightly. 😦 We said we would put more washcloths in, next time.

Happy Teaching.
