Why I Get “dressed” most Days

I CANNOT believe it’s already Saturday night…again! My goodness, time sure does fly. Something that has come up in conversation more than once this week is, “why I get dressed everyday”, and “why stay at home mom’s “should” get dressed everyday”.

The first part of this topic came up when I was chatting with my Mom. We were talking about something and I brought up the vow I made when I left my job. When I left work full time almost eight years ago, I promised myself that I was going to “take care of myself.” It didn’t necessarily mean wearing make-up everyday, although I do most days. It meant not “letting myself go”. I enjoy getting dressed, most days. I’m more productive and feel better about myself if I’m dressed. If I stay in sweats all day, everyday, I’m not as productive. Getting dressed to me says, “Hey, I have no where to go, but I could go somewhere.” 😉

The next time this was brought up was when I was chatting with my sister in law. I’m so blessed to have such amazing sister-in-laws. Anyway, she brought up something to me that I’ve never even thought of (out loud). My sis-in-law said when we only get dressed to leave the house, we are saying to our husbands that they don’t really matter enough to get dressed for. We’re saying we only really care about what people in public think. SOO true, and my husband used to say things like this to me. Then she sent me this great quote from a book she is reading.

-What constitutes a thing “worth doing” in the life of a lay Catholic woman? Well, for this woman, I want my husband to know that even after a decade of marriage I still like to catch his eye. I want my children to know that my vocation has value and is worthy of respect (certainly not the message I send when I wear sweat pants or pajamas all day long). And I want the world to see that I am thriving as a twenty-first century Catholic woman. –

Any way, I’m not saying I look down upon people who choose to wear sweats everyday. I don’t care what other people are wearing. This is about me, I hadn’t said all of these words out loud, but these were the thoughts in my head when I made the decision to get dressed, MOST days.

Saturday

I did get dressed. But I didn’t feel like taking a picture. I’m currently wearing a tie-dye shirt I made into a tank, with destroyed jean shorts. I played outside and mowed today…no need to look fancy. 😉
