I’ve been trying to wrap my head around my dreams for a few years. I know I want something, but I’m not sure exactly what it is, or how to make these dreams a reality. One thing I do know, I love to shop and style my clothes. Today, I asked one of my wonderful sister in laws if she would let me trial something. She agreed, because she is amazing.
I told Michelle that I wanted her to lay out some of her favorite closet pieces on her bed, and things that she is not quite sure what to do with, and I would come play “dress up” in her closet. Something you need to know about this amazing human, I’m able to call my sister, is she read a book a few years back, and got rid of everything she didn’t love in her closet. Her closet is very organized, but VERY minimal (compared to her craziest sister in law, me). Michelle is a smart shopper, in my book, she buys the basics. She has statement pieces, but the majority of her closet is plain tanks, shirts, sweaters, dresses and jeans. She really has created the perfect capsule closet. We talked about the trend of buying “loud” pieces of clothing, and how by doing that, you really limit yourself to how many “outfits” you can create. If you goal in life is to wear something different every day of the month, then yes, buy LOTS of clothes that are crazy and fun. If you goal is to have 50 pieces of clothing that can last you an entire year, then stick with the basics, my friends.
Lucky for me, Michelle has GREAT style, and she really doesn’t need help, but she let me play with her clothes and see if I could create new ideas with what she already owned. I did make a few suggestions to her about what she could buy to create even more looks, and I know over time, she will find these pieces.
The first thing I picked up, was a new top she had purchased. I instantly unbuttoned it, and started using it as a jacket. Michelle’s view of this top instantly changed and right away we turned a top into several different outfits.

Next, we looked at a skirt and talked about other ways to wear this favorite of hers, besides what she had already been doing. I suggested that she think toward fall with this skirt, too!!

A favorite in Michelle’s closet, is her black Maxi skirt. She wears it a lot, and she wears it well. I tried to think of other ways for her to style it.

A top that she bought, with every intention to keep buttoned, was turned into several different outfits.

An adorable tunic (that someone else also has..😏) we used in different ways, not all pictured.

This tunic would also be great with blue jeans. Untucked, tucked or knotted. Michelle is not a shorts girl, but if she were, this tunic also looks fantastic with shorts!!
I love this summer white sweater, and it is so fun in many different ways!!

A cute bell sleeve top.

A great denim top, I also suggested she wear it with the jeans she had on.

A favorite black dress, styled for a couple of seasons.

Her favorite tee.

Michelle doesn’t own many “loud” pieces, and she said the reason she doesn’t is because they limit you. She is smart and right. But I found ways to use this tank, for her.

Knowing who inspires your fashion, is important. Michelle bought this jacket after being inspired, so we found ways to wear it.

Lastly, she gave me a tunic and said she is thinking of getting rid of it, because she only wears it once or twice a year. I made some suggestions, and also suggested she look for a wide belt to use with it.

Of course, Michelle will take these ideas and wear what she is comfortable with. But without buying anything new, she found a bunch of new clothes today!!!
It’s not always about buying new pieces. It’s not about buying something that looks good on someone else. It’s about you and what makes you feel comfortable.
With all this being said, I MAY have found my new calling. I want to style and inspire people.

Those are really cute outfits! I loved reading this post!
